TWIN FIN

Back home in California, I spent the summer of 2023 shaping and glassing my own surfboard. I have been surfing most of my life, and this is a project I've wanted to do for a while.  The board I made is a twin fin fish; a short but wide board with a lot of volume, perfect for southern California waves.

Polyurethane blank, epoxy resin, 6 oz fiberglass

5’8 x 21 x 2 9/16 in

The logo, I designed and carved as a linocut and printed onto paper. During the glassing process, I placed the print underneath the fiberglass.

Using 2x4s, tarp, and two 8 ft LEDs, I built a makeshift shaping bay in my garage. I needed to build this structure to keep the foam dust contained, but more importantly so that I could have consistent side lighting while I shaped. Good side lighting is necessary to shape a board well, as it casts shadows on the rails which allow you to see the form much better.
